Gates Foundation Goalkeepers Africa in Motion Conference

On June 6th, 2025, the Gates Foundation hosted the first-ever Goalkeepers conference in Lagos, bringing together global and African leaders, changemakers, and innovators under the theme “Future of Progress: Africa in Motion.”

The groundbreaking event featured Mr. Wale Adeosun, Chairman of the Nigeria Higher Education Foundation (NHEF), alongside global philanthropist Bill Gates, Africa’s foremost industrialist Aliko Dangote, and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State. They were joined by a distinguished audience of policymakers, entrepreneurs, creators, and young African leaders committed to
accelerating progress toward the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Bill Gates spoke passionately about Africa’s potential, lauding Nigeria’s dynamic innovation landscape and the importance of partnerships that prioritize local leadership and scalable impact. He advised African leaders to utilise the foundation’s $200bn pledge to accelerate health and development progress through innovation and partnership, despite current challenges.

At the NHEF, we remain deeply passionate about development. We believe that empowering scholars, faculty, and university leadership is essential to unlocking the next generation of African progress.

Goalkeepers Lagos 2025 is a powerful reminder that the future of global progress will be shaped by Africa—and we are committed to ensuring Nigeria’s universities are at the forefront of that transformation.
