As discussions around the future of tertiary education funding continue to shape policy and institutional priorities across Nigeria, Wale Adeosun, Chairman of the Nigeria Higher Education Foundation (NHEF), has called for a more sustainable, diversified, and forward-looking approach to financing Nigerian universities.
Speaking at the recently concluded Commonwealth Institute Universities Leaders Conference, held in Lagos, Nigeria, from Thursday, May 21 to Friday, May 22, 2026, Mr. Adeosun emphasized the critical role of alumni engagement, institutional advancement, and strategic partnerships in securing the long-term sustainability of higher education institutions across the country.
According to Mr. Adeosun, Nigerian universities must move beyond overreliance on government allocations and begin to develop stronger advancement structures capable of attracting philanthropic support, expanding research funding opportunities, and fostering innovation-driven revenue streams. He noted that building enduring relationships with alumni and private sector stakeholders is essential to strengthening institutional resilience and improving educational outcomes.
The conference brought together leaders from academia, finance, and development to explore practical solutions for the future of university funding in Nigeria. Conversations centered on revenue diversification, commercialization of research and innovation, student engagement, and the leadership responsibility required to transform higher education institutions into globally competitive centers of excellence.
These discussions strongly align with the mission of the Nigeria Higher Education Foundation and its National University Advancement Program (NUAP), implemented in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Education.
